Salt Spring Island Release – Summer Kolsch

by Ian on May 23, 2011

With little fanfare, Salt Spring Island Brewery released their Summer Kolsch at Glo Lounge this weekend. Remember Glo, that lounge at the other end of the Selkirk trestle. If you are not there for the Kolsch, they have a large selection of European beers.

Anyways back to the Kolsch. A true Kolsch is only brewed by selected breweries within the city of Cologne, Germany. This is a hybrid ale. It first undergoes warm fermentation, then it is cold stored (lagered) for an extended period of time. The resulting beer is very delicate: straw, floral and light citrus notes are the hallmark of this brew. It is the perfect refresher for a hot summer day. I can only think of two other notable Kolsch-styles in BC: Spinnakers Swan-Lake and Mt. Begbie High Country. Please forgive me if I have forgotten anyone.
For now, Salt Spring Summer Kolsch is only available on tap. Hopefully to be available (soon) in bombers.
